The universe that we have is often more wondrous and bizarre than even our wildest science fiction dreams can imagine. The nature and composition of the tiniest quanta of matter, the origin and fate of the universe, and the unseen, dark components of reality are all examples of scientific facts that no one could have imagined. Of all the inspired dreams that humanity has had about where our technological and scientific advances would take us, star trek has perhaps been the most visionary.

Without warning or provocation an alien weapon appears above earth and unleashes a blast that kills millions across two continents. A second such weapon could destroy the entire planet. Only the starship enterprise is fast enought to stop the production of a second xindi weapon. But the crew cannot do it alone, and captain jonathan archer accepts a contingent of military assault command operations personnel -- battle-hardened soldiers known as macos -- on board his ship. Starfleet and the macos are two very different services sharing a common goal, but divided in their views of how to attain it. It is a culture clash that echoes across centuries of military service. The men and women on board the enterprise understand that somehow they must succeed in working together or the price will be paid in blood -- failure is not an option.

Planets are celestial bodies orbiting a star or stars. Most intelligent species evolved and still live on planets, including their respective homeworlds and colonies. I think it was back in 2013 there were a bunch of posts on medium about the economics of star trek by some very smart people. James t. Kirk is obsessed. How do we know he's obsessed? well, he has a persistent and unflagging commitment to an idea that may not be entirely worthy of such a commitment. (it's an evil mist. Quick, to the de-humidifier!) mccoy and spock are both helpful in mentioning the problems with this; mccoy, in fact uses the very word. As does kirk. And hey, it's even the title of the episode, so if you ever experience a moment of confusion—is kirk irritated? nauseous? infatuated?—simply check the episode guide on the appropriate season, and you'll find the answer staring you in the face: "obsession. " this one is for the cheap (non-jewelry rattling) seats.
